The North High art department is happy to announce that Mr. Juarez and Mrs. Mattern’s art students will be exhibiting at Silver Lake College in Manitowoc. The exhibition will run from March 28 – May 9, 2016. There will be reception for the students – TBD.

On November 5th, Mr. Juarez’s Drawing/Painting I students skyped with Midwest Artist Studios (MAS) artist, Todd Mrozinski. The MAS project aims to connect art education with regional contemporary artists through studio visits, curriculum documentation, and opportunities for educator outreach.
Todd is a full-time artist living and working in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He is currently the 2015-2016 Pfister Artist in Residence.
Born in Rensselaer, IN in 1974, Todd has loved to paint for as long as he can remember. He acquired his BFA in painting from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design in 1997 and in 1996 attended The New York Studio Program. He has been in solo and group exhibitions nationwide and his work is in various public and private collections. By focusing on two main areas, shadows and clothing, he explores the power of a subject’s presence through its absence. Meditation and contemplation as well as following inspiration and free flowing expression are essential to his working practice. Todd sees and shares the beauty and illumination of light and personality through drips and skeins and piles of paint. He and his wife, Renee Bebeau, have a studio in The Nut Factory, Riverwest, Wisconsin, where they offer art classes and workshops. He is currently represented by Woodman/Shimko Gallery, Palm Springs, California.

The last couple weeks have been busy with many projects! Sara gave a presentation on 1970’s poster design to four of Carrie McGoldrick’s history classes and then worked with them to create their own posters depicting important issues in the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s. Many students recreated specific design styles that emerged in the 70’s and focused on topics like civil rights and the Vietnam War. Check out the creative posters they made below!
Sara is also part of the two person exhibition currently up at The Frank Juarez Gallery, open on Saturdays from 10am – 4pm or by appointment. On the final day of the show, Saturday, June 13th, there will be a more in-depth artist talk from 3-4pm. All are welcome to attend!

This week Sara had a blast collaging with Tiffany Diven’s Broadcasting class! As a way of exploring methods on how to be more present and disconnect from the constant barrage of technology around them, students spent two class periods creating analog collages made with a variety of found materials.
More traditional collage materials such as magazine, newspaper and book scraps were incorporated into their pieces along with less conventional ones like food and 3-dimensional objects. A lot of thought and creativity were also put into the presentation of these collages, as many students utilized both sides of the paper and others made their work more sculptural or interactive. Students’ openness to experiment with the materials available and not feel limited with what they could do was inspiring to watch!
These collages will be on display in North’s 2nd Floor Gallery space until May 13th.
Mind mapping is still going strong in Ms. Cavanaugh and Ms. J’s classes! Below is more of the progress made on these maps during week 2. Everyone is really looking forward to seeing these in their completed forms!
Sara also met with students in Chad Stauber Soik’s Humanities class to help brainstorm ideas for the art component of their current essays which include topics such as religion, hope, and technology. Drawing, photography, and other visual mediums were discussed to figure out how to best present each student’s concept.
In the studio, there are collages and drawings everywhere! Sara has been busy creating pieces for her upcoming two-person show, In Tandem, opening in May at the Frank Juarez Gallery.
In two of Dr. Michels’ Social Studies classes we discussed Leonardo da Vinci, the arts during the Renaissance period, and the act of perception. Following this talk we did a couple drawing exercises including drawing some organic shapes, drawing flowers with our non-dominant hands, drawing the figure from an upside-down reference and blind contour (drawing without looking at the paper). These drawings turned out awesome and many of them are now being exhibited outside of room 218!
Last week Sara introduced color theory to an Interior Design class and discussed important terms and concepts and how they relate to design. Everyone created a color wheel and got to see how various colors relate to each other within various color schemes and harmonies.
It has been a busy couple weeks working with various classes at North as well as in the studio!
This week I had the chance to work on a very colorful art project with Beth Cesario’s class during their art time. We made glue sun catchers by filling plastic and metal lids with a layer of glue, adding some acrylic paint, and swirling this mixture around with the ends of paintbrushes to create a swirled pattern. When these dry they will each have a hole punched out and string added so they can be hung up. All of these turned out great; we’re all looking forward to seeing them completed and hanging in the windows!
There are also many new collages and drawings in the studio. Below are some of those more recent works!
Hello all! I am so happy and honored to be your Artist in Residence this semester! Thank you to Mr. J and the rest of the faculty at NHS for inviting me to be a part of your community.
Much of my work explores the concept of landscape and utilizes found materials to create invented spaces and structures. Below are some views of my new work space as well as a couple in-progress images of what I have been working on since beginning this residency.
If you would like to see some of my work in person, I have a couple small collages and drawings hanging in the display case outside of the art room; feel free to take a look!
I am very excited to be an art resource for the students and faculty as well as have the opportunity to further develop my artistic practice. I will be working in room 17 Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 8am-4pm, so everyone is always welcome to stop by and check out what I’m working on!
The Artist Lecture Series is an in-school program at Sheboygan North High School that invites local and regional visual artists to share their journey as artists with the beginning, intermediate, and advanced art classes. Visiting artists present and expose art students to such as but not limited to: a digital portfolio, actual artworks, talk about about careers, and the opportunity to interact with the artists. This program is organized by the Sheboygan North High Art Department.
This semester we invited the following artists to participate in our Artist Lecture Series: Sara Willadsen (Sheboygan Falls), Molly Sampson (Green Bay), Amy Jarvis (Fond du Lac), Marty Carney (Sheboygan Falls), and Patty Aker (Cleveland). This series is offered in the Fall Semester of each school year.

Growing up in England in the Swing’ 60’s exposed Patty Aker to the glamour of that era. At the beginning of the Millennium, she returned to college to pursue her passion for art and fiber. She attended class at Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, and the University of Wisconsin Sheboygan.
Her current work started when asked to create a baptismal banner for her church. She endeavored to paint the banner on silk. The project took many months of trial and error. The experience was so wonderful and addictive that it has spurned a cottage business venture, Gaelic Sands.
Painting and sharing art experiences, learning new techniques and teaching silk painting workshops are a crucial part of her world.
