Wall Drawing by Drawing Intensive Students

This video is a large scale wall drawing created by the NHS Drawing Intensive students. These students spend several weeks turning their sketches into reality. Using non-traditional materials such as string, yarn, tissue paper, and push pins large scale works were created in the lower level of NHS. Ideas varied, but one thing that unified my students’ ideas was to create some type of cityscape. Through their collaboration they created a vibrant city full of energy, individuality, and originality.

We live in an abstract art world

The Art Foundations 1 and Senior Art 1 students just wrapped up a fun unit on abstracting the self/portrait. This was part of a 6-week unit where students learned how to draw a realistic self/portrait using a grid and revisiting the wonderful world of color. This is probably one of the best units taught since it gives students structure and freedom to create when they dip that brush in some paint.

AIR Happenings as of February 10th

Hello all! I am so happy and honored to be your Artist in Residence this semester! Thank you to Mr. J and the rest of the faculty at NHS for inviting me to be a part of your community.

Much of my work explores the concept of landscape and utilizes found materials to create invented spaces and structures. Below are some views of my new work space as well as a couple in-progress images of what I have been working on since beginning this residency.

If you would like to see some of my work in person, I have a couple small collages and drawings hanging in the display case outside of the art room; feel free to take a look!

I am very excited to be an art resource for the students and faculty as well as have the opportunity to further develop my artistic practice. I will be working in room 17 Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 8am-4pm, so everyone is always welcome to stop by and check out what I’m working on!

This series is offered in the Fall Semester of each school year.

About Patty Aker

Growing up in England in the Swing’ 60’s exposed Patty Aker to the glamour of that era. At the beginning of the Millennium, she returned to college to pursue her passion for art and fiber. She attended class at Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, and the University of Wisconsin Sheboygan.

Her current work started when asked to create a baptismal banner for her church. She endeavored to paint the banner on silk. The project took many months of trial and error. The experience was so wonderful and addictive that it has spurned a cottage business venture, Gaelic Sands.

Painting and sharing art experiences, learning new techniques and teaching silk painting workshops are a crucial part of her world.
