Molly Sampson PictureMolly Sampson has over five years of New York City contemporary art gallery experience. She travels to New York frequently to keep on point with the current art market but stresses the importance of exploring local art markets. She lectures undergraduate students on professional practices in the art world and teaches art history courses on Graffiti Art. She wrote her Master’s thesis on the birth of the graffiti movement in New York and focused her research on the role of the blackbook.

Currently, she is on the committee to create art education programming to start in 2016 for the ARTgarage in Green Bay, WI. Past curated exhibitions include: Off the Walls and Post No Bills (Summer 2013), Love Me (Summer 2012), and Graffiti NYC: Artists of the Third Rail (Summer 2010). She received her MA in Modern and Contemporary Art, Connoisseurship and the History of the Art Market from Christie’s Education, New York and her BA from The George Washington University, Washington, DC.

Who Doesn’t Like A Good Selfie?

The Art Foundations 3 students just finished a series of Selfies. Each one as unique as they are. Students learned various color pencil techniques, which they were to select up to 3 that they wanted to incorporate within their drawing. Students were encouraged to approach it traditionally or experiment with non-traditional use of color. 

365 Artists 365 Days Project at the Wisconsin Art Education Association Conference

Today Mr. Juarez presented the 365 Artists 365 Days Project at the Wisconsin Art Education Association Fall Conference at the Bruce Guadalupe Community School in Milwaukee. This project is used as a vehicle to infuse Literacy into the art room. This project exposes, educates, and engages his Art Foundations 1/2 students into the world of Contemporary Art through the use of technology, silent reading, group discussion, and individual work on a weekly basis.

Mr. Juarez is currently compiling a list consisting of artists’ names, locations, website and genres. To receive this database email Mr. Juarez at fjuarez(at)sasd.net and in the subject box type: 365 Database. This will become available in early  January 2015.

Mr. Juarez is available to talk to any teacher interested in implementing this project into his/her art curriculum. 

About the 365 Artists 365 Days Project

On January 1, 2014, Frank Juarez from the Frank Juarez Gallery (Sheboygan) and Rachel Quirk and Zina Mussman from the Greymatter Gallery (Milwaukee) launched the 365 Artists 365 Days Project to the world.

What started as a way to spotlight contemporary artists daily  from across the country blossomed into getting the attention of artists from across the globe such as Germany, Slovenia, Australia,  Russia, London, Serbia, Israel and the United Kingdom.

“Rocking It” to a New School Year

This summer’s artventures bring new ideas into the art room. These ideas are going to expose our students to a wide variety of contemporary art being produced locally, regionally, nationally and internationally by emerging, mid-career and established artists. Introduce our students to artists who embraced their art education in elementary, middle school, high school or college, which as a result have encouraged them to pursue their passion – to create art. Also, to educate our students about the importance of connecting art education to other content areas through new programs such as our Artist in Residence Program and our 2nd Floor Gallery. These ideas will provide an avenue to consistently engage our students in learning both inside and outside the classroom.

todd mrozinski behind the scene1One project that we will be implementing is called the 365 Artists 365 Days Project. This project is an online blog in which artists from across the globe are interviewed and introduce to its growing readership on a daily basis. The other project is called the Midwest Artist Studios (MAS) Project. This project is designed to connect a contemporary art studio practice with art education. The MAS Team went on a week-long road trip interviewing artists from Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri and Wisconsin. These visits were documented via photographs, audio and video. As a result from this trip, lesson plans will be created based on the artists’ work to be implemented into classroom instruction and educators having access to these artists via Skype or Google+. 

Alongside these projects we continue to provide our students with a high school gallery internship at the Frank Juarez Gallery in Sheboygan. 

Ceramics: Works in Progress

The Senior Art 2 and Art Foundations 4 students have been working on their ceramic project. The Senior Art 2 students are creating their very own version of Japanese vinyl toys, however, instead of vinyl they are using clay. The Art Foundations 4 students are creating teapots inspired by compound words.

Introducing the 2013-2014 NHS Student/Parent Handbook Front Cover Design

Mr. Thennes, NHS Assistant Principal, approached Mr. Juarez to see if he was interested in having an art student design the front cover of next school year’s handbook. Without hesitation Mr. Juarez said, “yes”. The question was which student to approach with this challenge.

Mr. Juarez approached junior Lauren H to see if she would be interested in this project knowing that she only had a couple of weeks to design something. She jumped on the artportunity. He knew he wanted a junior to design the cover so that the student can see his/her design in action. 

Lauren stated that “I knew that I wanted to incorporate the elements of water in the design, but the idea developed as the design was being created. Mr. Juarez gave me a couple critiques that helped me to develop a better overall artwork. I have never had a critique before as a student. It was a very motivating process and it helped me to create a design I am proud of”.

State Bound Art Students

Congratulations to the following students for being selected to advance to the Wisconsin Art Education Association’s Youth Art Month State Art Exhibition in Madison. They are: Abby K., Kristi W., Brittnay B., Mikayla M., Gregory E., and Pa Zao V. Their work is currently on exhibit at the WAEA Regional Art Exhibition held at UW-Sheboygan Fine Art Gallery until February 7, 2013 with an artist reception/ceremony on January 27 from 12pm-2pm.
