Mr. Miller always finds ways to incorporate art into the programming of the Hmong Leadership Council. Below is a great example of what transpired during a spring formal at North High School. Thank you for sharing, Mr. Miller.

I thought you might like to see some of the art from our spring formal: Bangkok fading into a lotus lagoon, bamboo, and a lake by the jungle. Senior, Savannah B. was the lead artist and important contributions were made by Paris H (’14) and Sophomore, Lilly K. About 30-40 students worked on the murals. I finally confronted my blending phobia and am proud of what I was able to do with Paris on the water and beach areas!

Artist Reception for NHS Resident Artist, Sara Willadsen

AIR Happenings as of February 10th

Hello all! I am so happy and honored to be your Artist in Residence this semester! Thank you to Mr. J and the rest of the faculty at NHS for inviting me to be a part of your community.

Much of my work explores the concept of landscape and utilizes found materials to create invented spaces and structures. Below are some views of my new work space as well as a couple in-progress images of what I have been working on since beginning this residency.

If you would like to see some of my work in person, I have a couple small collages and drawings hanging in the display case outside of the art room; feel free to take a look!

I am very excited to be an art resource for the students and faculty as well as have the opportunity to further develop my artistic practice. I will be working in room 17 Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 8am-4pm, so everyone is always welcome to stop by and check out what I’m working on!

Patty Aker visits Sheboygan North High Art Department

The Artist Lecture Series is an in-school program at Sheboygan North High School that invites local and regional visual artists to share their journey as artists with the beginning, intermediate, and advanced art classes. Visiting artists present and expose art students to such as but not limited to: a digital portfolio, actual artworks, talk about about careers, and the opportunity to interact with the artists. This program is organized by the Sheboygan North High Art Department.

This semester we invited the following artists to participate in our Artist Lecture Series: Sara Willadsen (Sheboygan Falls), Molly Sampson (Green Bay), Amy Jarvis (Fond du Lac), Marty Carney (Sheboygan Falls), and Patty Aker (Cleveland). This series is offered in the Fall Semester of each school year.

About Patty Aker

Growing up in England in the Swing’ 60’s exposed Patty Aker to the glamour of that era. At the beginning of the Millennium, she returned to college to pursue her passion for art and fiber. She attended class at Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, and the University of Wisconsin Sheboygan.

Her current work started when asked to create a baptismal banner for her church. She endeavored to paint the banner on silk. The project took many months of trial and error. The experience was so wonderful and addictive that it has spurned a cottage business venture, Gaelic Sands.

Painting and sharing art experiences, learning new techniques and teaching silk painting workshops are a crucial part of her world.

Artist in Residence Happenings as of November 21

WOW! What a great couple of weeks in the AIR program! You may remember Mel Kolstad, resident artist, talking about visiting with Mr. Soik’s Honors Humanities class for their first unit – well, he asked her back to consult with the students about their second unit, which deals with ancient Sumerian and Egyptian culture, The Epic of Gilgamesh and the samples of Egyptian literature. What they created was incredible, as you can see!

Mel also met with Mrs. Reinemann’s Chemistry Club, which was SO much fun! The club made Solarfast prints and tie-dyed t-shirts! The students had a great time making these, and the project will be implemented in a future chemistry class. What a fun way to learn about photoreactive dyes!

365 Artists 365 Days Project at the Wisconsin Art Education Association Conference

Today Mr. Juarez presented the 365 Artists 365 Days Project at the Wisconsin Art Education Association Fall Conference at the Bruce Guadalupe Community School in Milwaukee. This project is used as a vehicle to infuse Literacy into the art room. This project exposes, educates, and engages his Art Foundations 1/2 students into the world of Contemporary Art through the use of technology, silent reading, group discussion, and individual work on a weekly basis.

Mr. Juarez is currently compiling a list consisting of artists’ names, locations, website and genres. To receive this database email Mr. Juarez at fjuarez(at)sasd.net and in the subject box type: 365 Database. This will become available in early January 2015.

Mr. Juarez is available to talk to any teacher interested in implementing this project into his/her art curriculum.

About the 365 Artists 365 Days Project

On January 1, 2014, Frank Juarez from the Frank Juarez Gallery (Sheboygan) and Rachel Quirk and Zina Mussman from the Greymatter Gallery (Milwaukee) launched the 365 Artists 365 Days Project to the world.

What started as a way to spotlight contemporary artists daily from across the country blossomed into getting the attention of artists from across the globe such as Germany, Slovenia, Australia, Russia, London, Serbia, Israel and the United Kingdom.

Scholastic Art Awards at the Milwaukee Art Museum

Seniors, Maggie C and Lauren H, were recognized in front of a large audience for earning a Gold Key Award for their art. Maggie earned a Gold Key for her sequential art and Lauren earned three Gold Keys for jewerly, mixed media sculpture and design. Their work will advanced to the national level in New York. Over 2000 student entries from across the state of Wisconsin were submitted and 430 pieces were selected to be exhibited at the Milwaukee Art Museum. This exhibition ends March 17, 2014.

OVERVIEW

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards has an impressive legacy dating back to 1923. Over the years, the Awards have grown to become the longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the U.S., and the nation’s largest source of scholarships for creative young artists and writers. A noteworthy roster of past winners includes Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford, Joyce Carol Oates, Stephen King, John Updike, and many more.

Each year, the Alliance partners with more than 100 visual and literary-arts organizations across the country to bring The Awards to local communities. Teens in grades 7 through 12 can apply in 28 categories of art and writing for the chance to earn scholarships and have their works exhibited or published. Submissions are juried by luminaries in the visual and literary arts, some of whom are past award recipients. Panelists look for works that best exemplify originality, technical skill and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.

In the last five years alone, students submitted nearly 900,000 original works of art and writing. During that period, more than 60 top arts institutes and colleges have partnered with the Awards to make $40 million in scholarships and financial aid available to regional and national Scholastic Award winners.

Mikado Backdrop Coming to an End

These past three weeks have been a whirlwind of excitement and trying to get all Drawing/Painting I students to contribute to this unique experience of painting the backdrop for North’s upcoming play, “Mikado”. We had our obstacles as you can see from the photos below.

Students were asked to break into groups or work alone to come up with a design that best represented this play (based on an initial sketch from Mr. Johnson). To work on an idea when it is not yours can be a challenge and the effort can be minimal. However, these students welcomed the opportunity to work on a large-scale painting and worked well in a group setting.

This marks our 4th project working with Mr. Johnson.

State Bound Art Students

Congratulations to the following students for being selected to advance to the Wisconsin Art Education Association’s Youth Art Month State Art Exhibition in Madison. They are: Abby K., Kristi W., Brittnay B., Mikayla M., Gregory E., and Pa Zao V. Their work is currently on exhibit at the WAEA Regional Art Exhibition held at UW-Sheboygan Fine Art Gallery until February 7, 2013 with an artist reception/ceremony on January 27 from 12pm-2pm.
