Artist Liz Ann Lange ends semester long residency at Sheboygan North High School

Liz Ann Lange is about to wrap up her residency at Sheboygan North High School. She is the third artist in residence that we have had in the past 1.5 years. This program is supported by the Sheboygan Area School District and Sheboygan North High School. It is always magical to see student interact with professional artists. There is always a high level of enthusiasm in the air.

The Sheboygan North High Artist in Residence Program is designed to expose, educate and engage the North High community to local and regional artists each semester during the current academic school year.

Wall Drawing by Drawing Intensive Students

This video is a large scale wall drawing created by the NHS Drawing Intensive students. These students spend several weeks turning their sketches into reality. Using non-traditional materials such as string, yarn, tissue paper, and push pins large scale works were created in the lower level of NHS. Ideas varied, but one thing that unified my students’ ideas was to create some type of cityscape. Through their collaboration they created a vibrant city full of energy, individuality, and originality.

The Power of Art: Hmong Leadership Council spring formal mural

Mr. Miller always finds ways to incorporate art into the programming of the Hmong Leadership Council. Below is a great example of what transpired during a spring formal at North High School. Thank you for sharing, Mr. Miller.

A note from Mr. Miller, Hmong Leadership Council advisor

I thought you might like to see some of the art from our spring formal: Bangkok fading into a lotus lagoon, bamboo, and a lake by the jungle. Senior, Savannah B. was the lead artist and important  contributions were made by Paris H (’14) and Sophomore, Lilly K. About 30-40 students worked on the murals. I finally confronted my blending phobia and am proud of what I was able to do with Paris on the water and beach areas!

Thanks for always letting me share this work with you.

String Art on Display

Drawing & Painting students explored the use of non-traditional materials to create drawings using string and push pins. The 4′ x 8′ drawings are on display in the hallway outside of Room 25 on the ground level of NHS.

Celebrating 75 Years of Excellence | North High Art Department

Saturday, September 29 marked North High’s 75 year anniversary celebration. To commemorate this milestone the North High Art Department facilitated a community-based mural. This was one of many opportunities to get involved in painting this mural designed by Sheboygan native, Dale Knaak.

A special thank you to our principal, Mr. Jason Bull, for giving us the opportunity to share our passion with others.

Stay tuned for a listing of upcoming painting opportunities. No experience necessary. If you can hold a brush, then you can paint.

75th Anniversary Sheboygan North High Mural

Below are two proposed designs for North’s 75th Anniversary. These designs were created by Dale Knaak, mural painter living and working in Sheboygan.

Sketch#1

Tried to incorporate all points on suggestions sheet you provided. The four core are addressed with graphics. They seem cliche, but not sure of another way to represent them. For co-curriculars I used students from past to present. Did not specifically represent each one on sketch. Tried to generalize.

This sketch shows old building at left (possibly in black and white, transitioning to low key color). The right side would show present school building. The fact it runs off of edge of mural could be a suggestion to the future.

The word Sheboygan with NHS addresses Sheboygan.

Sketch#2
This sketch mainly focuses on the ’75 Year’ theme. It’s meant to be simple and direct. A celebration of the 75 year accomplishment. The school itself could be the focal point. Banner or type could be smaller. I see the people looking towards the center or focal point. It could be students and faculty? A simple,  clean look.

These sketches only represent a point of departure at this point. Just to get everyone thinking in the same direction. It is my opinion we may be trying to show too much in the mural. Diluting the real message. ‘A celebration of 75 years of educating’. But that’s just how I feel about the mural as a visual.

The End is Fast Approaching

We are about 97% finished with the AIDA banners. The only thing that is needed are the addition of text and minor finishing touches. Working on this project was not an easy task for this group of art students working with different personalities and various degrees of work ethic and not to mention motivation. Overall, the banners are turning out great. I cannot wait to unveil them.

The Final Stretch

Everyone is almost done with the banners. Its tough staying on task now that its been a couple weeks but all of the students are doing a great job. The four banners are just getting some finishing touches and we will be all finished up. Its exciting thinking about how far we’ve come and how cool the banners will look hanging as the backdrop for the play.

The Egyptian Ladies

We have finished drawing the entire design and have started painting. It’s really going pretty good. We have started on the skin tone, and the other shade of brown on the type. Of course gold, the gold it really a really cool color, all shiny and what not, but the gold is oil based, which means that it dose NOT come off you hands like acrylic. We are doing good on progress and will finish on time if not earlier. This is going to turn out amazing. We have and awesome group and every one works well together.
