AIR Happenings as of April 9th

Before break Sara had been working with Kris Flynn’s Spanish class to create Trees of Life. Traditional Mexican Trees of Life are clay sculptures that depict the Biblical story of creation, but for this project students each created his or her own two-dimensional autobiographical tree. Students brought in various materials to make their trees including family photos and collected ephemera like ticket stubs and hair. Many creative approaches were taken so check out the in-progress and now completed trees below!

Mind mapping is still going strong in Ms. Cavanaugh and Ms. J’s classes! Below is more of the progress made on these maps during week 2. Everyone is really looking forward to seeing these in their completed forms!

Sara also met with students in Chad Stauber Soik’s Humanities class to help brainstorm ideas for the art component of their current essays which include topics such as religion, hope, and technology. Drawing, photography, and other visual mediums were discussed to figure out how to best present each student’s concept.

In the studio, there are collages and drawings everywhere! Sara has been busy creating pieces for her upcoming two-person show, In Tandem, opening in May at the Frank Juarez Gallery.

AIR Happenings as of March 12th

This week has been a busy one! Sara has been spending the last two days working on mind maps with Sylvia Cavanaugh and Maria Jesinski’s classes and introducing different drawing and collage techniques to incorporate visual elements. Focusing on South Asia as a unifying theme and connecting topics like Colonialism in India, the Industrial Revolution, and Henry Thoreau together, students got right to work drawing and planning their mind maps. Below are a couple different approaches with this project.

String Art on Display

Drawing & Painting students explored the use of non-traditional materials to create drawings using string and push pins. The 4′ x 8′ drawings are on display in the hallway outside of Room 25 on the ground level of NHS.

“The Passing of Time” Works in Progress

A drawing typically captures a moment in time; a still, motionless instant. For their current project, Drawing Intensive students are creating drawings that show change or transformation. By utilizing layers of tracing paper and a drawing medium(s) of their choice, the students are being challenged to create works of art that illustrate “The Passing of Time.”

Artist in Residence Happenings as of November 6

What a great week!  Artist in Residence Mel Kolstad was able to hang out with Amy Jarvis, who came to visit before her talk with the Art Foundations kids next week in Mr J’s class, and they were invited back to Dr. Michels’ class for a potlatch, where the students celebrated their successes with food, singing and magic!

Mel also spent some time in the IMC, where Ms. Gloede so generously invited her to take some of the discarded books from the library.  She says she had a wonderful time looking through all the books, and took some for future projects!  One of the pieces that she created includes some old cellophane tape that had yellowed, and she used that as the foundation for this piece.  There is beauty in the mundane!

Mel also used her backpack press to create this 3-color letterpress print.  In a true letterpress studio, the printer would use what’s called a lock-up to secure his or her blocks and cuts.  It’s amazing what rubber bands can do in a pinch!

Celebrating 75 Years of Excellence | North High Art Department

Saturday, September 29 marked North High’s 75 year anniversary celebration. To commemorate this milestone the North High Art Department facilitated a community-based mural. This was one of many opportunities to get involved in painting this mural designed by Sheboygan native, Dale Knaak.

A special thank you to our principal, Mr. Jason Bull, for giving us the opportunity to share our passion with others.

Stay tuned for a listing of upcoming painting opportunities. No experience necessary. If you can hold a brush, then you can paint.
