String Art on Display

Drawing & Painting students explored the use of non-traditional materials to create drawings using string and push pins. The 4′ x 8′ drawings are on display in the hallway outside of Room 25 on the ground level of NHS.

Patty Aker visits Sheboygan North High Art Department

The Artist Lecture Series is an in-school program at Sheboygan North High School that invites local and regional visual artists to share their journey as artists with the beginning, intermediate, and advanced art classes. Visiting artists present and expose art students to such as but not limited to: a digital portfolio, actual artworks, talk about about careers, and the opportunity to interact with the artists. This program is organized by the Sheboygan North High Art Department. 

This semester we invited the following artists to participate in our Artist Lecture Series: Sara Willadsen (Sheboygan Falls), Molly Sampson (Green Bay), Amy Jarvis (Fond du Lac), Marty Carney (Sheboygan Falls), and Patty Aker (Cleveland). This series is offered in the Fall Semester of each school year.

About Patty Aker

Growing up in England in the Swing’ 60’s exposed Patty Aker to the glamour of that era. At the beginning of the Millennium, she returned to college to pursue her passion for art and fiber. She attended class at Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, and the University of Wisconsin Sheboygan.

Her current work started when asked to create a baptismal banner for her church. She endeavored to paint the banner on silk. The project took many months of trial and error. The experience was so wonderful and addictive that it has spurned a cottage business venture, Gaelic Sands.

Painting and sharing art experiences, learning new techniques and teaching silk painting workshops are a crucial part of her world.

Celebrating 75 Years of Excellence | North High Art Department

Saturday, September 29 marked North High’s 75 year anniversary celebration. To commemorate this milestone the North High Art Department facilitated a community-based mural. This was one of many opportunities to get involved in painting this mural designed by Sheboygan native, Dale Knaak. 

A special thank you to our principal, Mr. Jason Bull, for giving us the opportunity to share our passion with others.

North High Art Department Splatter Paint

North High Art Department participated in North High’s 2012 Lip Dub celebrating 75 years of Excellence. A portion of this splatter painting will be included in the official North High Lip Dub. We just happened to document this unique experience with our fabulous art students.

The song used in this video is not part of North High’s Lip Dub video.

Assemblage | Advanced 3-D Design Students

Assemblage is an artistic process. In the Visual Arts, it consists of making three-dimensional or two-dimensional artistic compositions by putting together found objects. 

This piece describes my dancing, my creative side and me. This uses colorful 3-D objects. The words inspire me and I used them to inspire others. I enjoyed this very unique project.  – Kristi W, Advanced 3-D Design
 
This project represents me in many ways. The tennis balls show and mean that I am athletic and I am an athlete. I also used color chips and bring colors because I like bright colors. The two metal pieces show that I love solving problems and puzzles. The M&M wrapper is there because I love junk food.
 
I also have badges; a Jordan badge and a Hollister badge. I made an airplane out of aluminum can, which describes that I love drinking green tea. I have a lot of pencils and pens to demonstrate my passion for art. I have little number stencils because I love math. 75th Anniversary Sheboygan North High Mural

Below are two proposed designs for North’s 75th Anniversary. These designs were created by Dale Knaak, mural painter living and working in Sheboygan. 

Sketch#1

Tried to incorporate all points on suggestions sheet you provided. The four core are addressed with graphics. They seem cliche, but not sure of another way to represent them. For co-curriculars I used students from past to present. Did not specifically represent each one on sketch. Tried to generalize.

This sketch shows old building at left (possibly in black and white, transitioning to low key color). The right side would show present school building. The fact it runs off of edge of mural could be a suggestion to the future.

The word Sheboygan with NHS addresses Sheboygan.


Sketch#2
This sketch mainly focuses on the ’75 Year’ theme. It’s meant to be simple and direct. A celebration of the 75 year accomplishment. The school itself could be the focal point. Banner or type could be smaller. I see the people looking towards the center or focal point. It could be students and faculty? A simple,  clean look. 
 
These sketches only represent a point of departure at this point. Just to get everyone thinking in the same direction. It is my opinion we may be trying to show too much in the mural. Diluting the real message. ‘A celebration of 75 years of educating’. But that’s just how I feel about the mural as a visual.

Future Inventors

The Advanced 3-D Design students are creating prototypes for future inventions based on their daily consumption of electronics, fashion, technology, etc. Visit us for more images.

Reproducing Famous Paintings

The Art Foundations 3 last project of the semester was to select an Impressionist, Expressionist, Abstract or Surreal artist and reproduce the work based on style and size. Most, if not all, paintings were created using oil, the students used acrylic paint. They were to write a one-page paper on the artist to gather research and to learn more about their chosen artist. Art students were expected to mix their own colors, replicate the image on canvas and assist with stretching the canvas.
