This week, I got to hang out in Carrie McGoldrick’s classroom and give the students a little intro about myself as the A.I.R., and to offer some tips on sketching. Their assignment was to create a political cartoon.

NHS AiR Happenings as of December 11th
by Liz Ann Lange
The past month has been so busy that I neglected to write much of anything down!
I prepared and hung artwork in 2 separate exhibitions, one of which I had approximately 10 studio days in which to build and paint 12 panels before the day of installation.
I also was able to lend some helpful suggestions to Mr. Soik’s 4th hour humanities class, as they were doing another “Artplosion” project based on a wide array of interconnected topics. The class ended up using a storyboard format to express their topics of interest.
Last Thursday I had a fantastic time hosting one of the Brown Bag Lecture Series lunch talks right here in the studio! It is a chance for faculty and staff to get to know what I’m doing here, when they might not otherwise have been able to deviate from their busy schedules and routines.
We sat around the studio tables and I gave a little background about myself then opened up to questions. I really enjoyed being a part of this program.
On Friday evening (December 11th), I will be taking down my exhibit at Lakeland College. As a 2010 alum it was an honor to come back as a visiting artist and exhibit in the same space I hung my senior exhibit, as a student then, nearly 6 years ago.
Next week I will be meeting with Carrie McGoldrick‘s classes on Monday and Tuesday to help the students approach a political cartooning assignment. I hope to draw on a bit of my graphic communications knowledge to help the students transfer their ideas to paper.

Drawing-Painting I students Skype with MAS artist, Todd Mrozinski
On November 5th, Mr. Juarez’s Drawing/Painting I students skyped with Midwest Artist Studios (MAS) artist, Todd Mrozinski. The MAS project aims to connect art education with regional contemporary artists through studio visits, curriculum documentation, and opportunities for educator outreach.
Todd is a full-time artist living and working in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He is currently the 2015-2016 Pfister Artist in Residence.
Born in Rensselaer, IN in 1974, Todd has loved to paint for as long as he can remember. He acquired his BFA in painting from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design in 1997 and in 1996 attended The New York Studio Program. He has been in solo and group exhibitions nationwide and his work is in various public and private collections. By focusing on two main areas, shadows and clothing, he explores the power of a subject’s presence through its absence. Meditation and contemplation as well as following inspiration and free flowing expression are essential to his working practice. Todd sees and shares the beauty and illumination of light and personality through drips and skeins and piles of paint. He and his wife, Renee Bebeau, have a studio in The Nut Factory, Riverwest, Wisconsin, where they offer art classes and workshops. He is currently represented by Woodman/Shimko Gallery, Palm Springs, California.

The Midwest Artist Studios Project is supported by a grant from the Kohler Foundation, Inc., Wisconsin Art Education Association, and the National Art Education Foundation.
Drawing Painting I students visit Liz, artist in residence at North High
Today Liz popped into the classroom to check out what the Drawing Painting I students are currently doing. The DPI students are working on their shadow oil paintings inspired by the process of MAS artist, Todd Mrozinski.
Liz spent a few minutes with each student before they headed into her studio to end the period.
Time for a Selfie – drawings by Art Foundations 3
Everyone love a great selfie. Students had the option of taking their own selfie or to take a photo of someone else. Regardless of what they chose, they had to take ownership of the photo. They were introduced to various colored pencil techniques (scraffito, scumbling, frottage, cross-hatching, layering), the use of a colorless blender, and a grid (optional). They are all unique just like my students. : )
We are North – perspective drawings
Art Foundations 1 and Senior Art 1students finished their 1 and 2-point perspective. As a final assessment the Art Foundations 1 students created 6 large scale drawing at NHS using tape. This was a great way to students to apply their understanding on perspective as well as to engage in a group activity.

Art Foundations 1 students create large scale perspective drawings
The Art Foundations 1 students are creating large scale drawings using electrical tape. Each team selected their unique perspective of North High School . These drawings are student driven with little or no assistance from the teacher. This group activity is their final assessment of our 3-week unit on 1 and 2-point perspective.
