Non-objective Designs by Art Foundations 2 and Senior Art 2 Students

One of our central themes this semester is positive and negative space and how it will look like in 4 projects this semester. The projects will engage students in making original art in metal, printing, sculpture, and ceramics. The Art Foundations 2 and Senior Art 2 students created 16 thumbnail sketches of proposed designs. Out of the 16 they were to select their favorite resulting in a non-objective design.

Heavy Metal

The Art Foundations 2 and Senior Art 2 students are rockin’ it with their Art Metals project. They are designing non-objective functional works of art. What started as a series of 16 designs will result in one original work of art.

Drawing Intensive Critiques with Mrs. Jorgensen

SAM_0119Juxtaposition is defined as the fact of two things being seen or placed close together with contrasting effect. This was the basis for the Drawing Intensive students’ current project. What started as a sketchbook assignment ended up as a project. Having discussions with students about their purpose behind their work was so engaging and the outcome turned out great.

Arist in Residence Happenings as of October 30

Another big week of happenings with the AIR program!  This week Artist in Residence Mel Kolstad was able to see Dr. Michels’ students’ “Mind Maps” that were created in the African/Asian Studies classes during 1st, 2nd and 4th hours!   As you can see, the students put a LOT of work into these pieces, and they turned out wonderfully!  Thanks again so much to Dr. Michels for allowing Mel to visit his classes – what an enriching experiece.

Mel also got to meet Sara Willadsen, a painter from Sheboygan, who will be the 3rd quarter Artist in Residence!  She gave a talk in Mr. J’s classes, and then she and Mel hung out in the studio for a while.  What a great addition to the North High Art Department!

Drawing Intensive Students Juxtapose

Juxtaposition
jux·ta·po·si·tion
ˌjəkstəpəˈziSH(ə)n/
noun
the fact of two things being seen or placed close together with contrasting effect.
Drawing Intensive students are using Olivia Gude’s Post Modern Practices to create their own original artwork based off of the term “juxtaposition”. After their initial sketch of what this meant to them they were to redraw it in a larger format incorporating whatever media they wanted to use.

Artist Statement
I make pictures that satisfy my curiosity in aesthetics and found materials. Combining these articles with reappropriations of my own work allows me to employ past patterns and marks as prompts for new structures and environments. The aggressive process used to construct these secretive spaces is kept in balance with the consciousness to know when to stop.
