The Art Foundations 1 students are undergoing a colorful transformation between realism to abstraction. Last week we spend time on Color Theory and now the have to implement what they learned into their very own masterpiece. Each painting with a different twist on Abstraction. Here are some works in progress.
Collage Painting with Drawing/Painting I Students
Drawing/Painting I students are to select a topic that you are interested in working with such as but not limited to: fashion, careers, cars, culture, surreal, random, etc. Using magazines, drawings, and newspapers they are to begin searching for images relating to their topic. Using these images they begin to cut these images out and create a collage in their sketchbook using their knowledge of appropriation and juxtaposition to determine composition. Finally, they learn how to stretch their very own canvas.
Art Foundations 3 | Self-portraits
Art Foundations 3 students were engaged in developing their self-portraits through the use of tissue paper cut into very small squares. The build up of layers demonstrated the students knowledge of their use of value.
This project was facilitated by Elizabeth Moritmer, Silver Lake College student teacher.
Making Spirits Bright” Holiday Lights with a creative spin
The North High Art Club completed making the holiday wreaths for “Making Spirits Bright” Holiday Lights at Evergreen Park in November.
The event is hosting by the local rotary clubs in an effort to raise money for the numerous food panties in our county.
The wreaths will be on display in the Quarry Building.
Artist Lecture Series | Last Day with Kay Jelinek
Today is the last day that the Drawing/Painting I students work with Sheboygan-based artist, Kay Jelinek. The art students learned quite a bit of what it takes to make their very own collaged work of art. Here are the last of the photographs from this experience.
Thanks Kay.

Artist Lecture Series | Kay Jelinek Visits North High Art Department (Part I)
Today Sheboygan-based artist, Kay Jelinek, visited my period 6 Drawing/Painting I & Portfolio I art students. Kay is participating in our art department’s Artist Lecture Series. Here are some photos taken from today’s activities.
The Artist Lecture Series was created in 2009 as a response to further expose, educate and engage students to the world of art that exists locally and regionally. The premise of this in-school program is to invite local and regional artists working in various subject matter, media and genres to share with my students how and why artists create art. This can take form in a presentation, a demo or a workshop. This gives art students the opportunity to hear an artist talk about the challenges and successes of being an artist today, view original works of art, and to interact with the artist. As an adult it can be difficult to talk to an expert or a professional about the creative process, which is why exposing students at a young age will allow them to work through this barrier to prepare them for life after high school.
Op Art by Portfolio I Art Students
These paintings were created by Portfolio I Art Students. Students were to stretch and prep their own canvas, create two color studies of potential op art designs and determine the best composition that will allow them to create the illusion that they are aiming for.
These paintings are done with acrylic.
